Garrick Porteous has been rewarded for his excellent season with selection for the Walker Cup. The biennial match will be played at the National Golf Links of America, Southampton, New York on the 7th and 8th September 2013. This will be the 44th match between the amateur golfers from Great Britain and Ireland (GB&I) and their American counterparts and it is unique as it is returning to the site of the very first match in 1922.

This is a fantastic achievement for Garrick and an historic moment as very few amateur golfers get the chance to play in the Walker Cup Match. His form this season has been superb. He won the British Amateur at Royal Cinque Ports and the Scottish Strokeplay Championship at Southerness. He finished runner up in the Welsh Strokeplay at Royal Porthcawl and helped England to win both the European Nations Cup in Spain and the European Teams Championship in Denmark.

After the team was announced Garrick commented that 'the Walker Cup was my main goal for this season. It is a fantastic feeling to be part of a very strong GB&I team and I am relishing the challenge of playing against America in New York'.

Garrick is joined by six fellow Englishmen (Matt Fitzpatrick, Nathan Kimsey, Max Orrin, Neil Raymond, Callum Shinkwin and Jordan Smith) who have all had a stellar season. The final three players comprise one Welshman, Rhys Pugh and two Irishmen, Kevin Phelan and Gavin Moynihan.

Garrick Porteous, after competing in the Open Championship at Muirfield is leaving the links golf behind and heading to America to compete in two major amateur events. Firstly, he is playing in the 111th Western Amateur Championship which is to be held at The Alotian Club, located in Roland, Arkansas, outside Little Rock 29th July to 4th August. Then he will be heading to Brookline Massachusetts for the US Amateur 12-19th August, the scene of the 33rd Ryder Cup known famously as the 'Battle of Brookline' .

Whilst in America he will be based at The Old Palm golf club in Florida. As a member of the International Sports Management golf group he can now take advantage of their practice base in America. Hopefully, this will give him the perfect environment to practice and sharpen his golf game ahead of these two prestigious events.

Garrick Porteous fulfilled his amateur dream by competing alongside the world's best professionals in the Open Championship at Muirfield. Whilst he didn't make the cut, he did have many positive experiences to take away from the event. Firstly, he played with two major champions, Jim Furyk and Justin Leonard, in practice which was fantastic and enlightening. Furthermore, the draw for the first two rounds saw him play with Martin Kaymer and Jason Day, whom he said 'were really great guys'.

Despite being nervous on the first tee in round one he launched a superb drive down the fairway which was loudly appreciated by the knowledgeable galleries. He also had terrific support from many Bamburgh Castle golf club members and North East golfers who came to Muirfield to cheer him on.

Garrick looked comfortable and at home on the biggest golf stage in the world and he appeared a seasoned professional and not an amateur. All these positive experiences augur well for 2014 when he plans to join the professional golf ranks.

England are the Kings of Europe once again. They won the European Amateur Team Championship trophy by defeating the 'auld enemy', Scotland 4½ - 2½ in the final at Silkeborg Ry Golfklub in Jutland, Denmark. The England team was made up of Nathan Kimsey, Max Orrin, Garrick Porteous, Neil Raymond, Toby Tree and Callum Shinkwin, a very strong team with five players in the top 35 in the world amateur golf rankings. It was a very close final and needed extra holes in the final two singles games to see England home.

Garrick Porteous (Bamburgh Castle) played a significant role in the team victory during the week long tournament. After a solid start in the stroke play England finished third and were safely into the top flight for the matchplay. France advanced as the top qualifiers and the knock out stages also contained Scotland and Ireland.

England faced the hosts Denmark in the quarter-final, but despite extensive home support they came through 5-2 with Garrick winning both his foursomes and singles. Garrick continued his good form with another two wins as England defeated The Netherlands in the semi-final 6-1. This set up the classic final with Scotland after they had defeated both Germany and then France.

The final could not have started better as Neil Raymond and Garrick won their foursomes with a birdie blitz on the front nine which equated to five under par. Despite a Scottish revival, Garrick and Neil won 4&2. This was closely followed by Nathan Kimsey and Max Orrin who also won 4&2.

However, the singles proved to be a nail-biting affair. Robertson gained the Scots first point with a 1 hole win over Callum Shinkwin only for Porteous to restore England's advantage with a 3&2 success over McDonald. Bradley Neil won by 2 holes over Toby Tree and then the match score was 3-2. Following this, it was left to Max Orrin to secure the necessary fourth point. Orrin bounced back from trailing to Scott Borrowman to force extra holes and then won the decisive match on the 19th.

A great result for a very strong England team and the success for England Golf continues in 2013. Garrick was also part of the successful England team that won the European Nations Cup earlier this year. It has been a great year so far for Garrick and maybe it will get even better as he heads to the Open Championship at Muirfield.

Garrick Porteous fulfils every golfer's dream by teeing it up at the Open Championship at Muirfield this week. He earned his place by winning the British Amateur Championship at Royal Cinque Ports, Deal earlier this summer. He warmed up for Open week by helping England win the European Amateur Team Championship in Denmark.

Currently ranked 10th on the World Amateur Golf Rankings, he now embarks on the greatest golfing adventure, playing with the world's top professionals in golfs' oldest major championship. He did manage to practice at Muirfield prior to going to Denmark and really enjoyed the experience. He commented that 'the rough is up and I am going to relish the challenge'.

Garrick Porteous achieved every amateur golfer's dream when he won the 118th British Amateur Championship at Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club, Deal on Saturday 22nd June 2013. By defeating Toni Hakula from Finland 6&5 he became the first Englishman for 10 years to lift the coveted trophy. His second success in the space of a month ensured his starting place in The Open Championship at Muirfield on 15th July, in addition to invites to The Masters and US Open 2014. More invites have subsequently followed to the Scottish and Australian Opens.

The British Amateur Championship is a marathon and Garrick played 11 rounds of golf in 8 days. The strokeplay was played over Royal Cinque Ports and Prince's golf clubs, with the matchplay at the former. Garrick drew the worst of the weather on day one at Prince's and shot 77, but then bounced back on day two to shoot 69 (two under) at Royal Cinque Ports to comfortably make the matchplay stages.

The Irish Times referred to Garrick as 'the scourge of the Irish' as he took out their three qualifiers Cormac Sharvin, Paul Dunne and Aaron Kearney in rounds one, two and three. This set up a quarter final with his good friend and England team mate Neil Raymond. It proved to be a classic. After a slow start Garrick played some great golf to be three up at the turn. He knew Neil would throw everything at him, but Garrick stood firm and ran out victorious 2&1.

The semi-final pitted Garrick with the American prodigy Jim Liu, aged 17. Liu, aged 14, won the US Junior Amateur title and broke Tiger Wood's record as the youngest ever winner. In a tight encounter, where there was never more than one hole in it, Garrick found himself one down playing the 18th. An uncharacteristic shank from the American let Garrick in and he never looked back. He had a great up and down at the 19th to secure his place in the final.

Saturday 22nd June was a brutal day to play golf with winds gusting 40-45 miles per hour and the rain bleached across the famous links. After losing the first hole Garrick settled into his game and raced to a four hole lead after nine. Hakula did pull it back to one down after 16 holes but Garrick finally went into lunch three up and 18 holes to play. As the sun came out Garrick maintained his form and holed some great putts for birdie on the 23rd and 27th holes to be five up with nine to play. Although Hakula birdied the next, Garrick was in control and won on the 31st to seal the 6&5 victory.

His biggest fan, his sister, Angharad, followed his progress night and day from Stanford University, California. Angharad, a county golfer herself with Northumberland is studying for her PhD. Stanford is the mecca for golf and is getting ready to welcome Jim Liu, who Garrick beat in the semi-final. Stanford's most famous golfers include Tiger Woods, Michelle Wie and Tom Watson and are also coached by former Walker Cup player Phil Rowe. Even Garrick has competed at Stanford in the NCAA Regional Finals.

Angharad kept the social media rolling in the latter stages of the tournament with her inside knowledge of Garrick and the golfing world. She has been very quick to claim the caddying duties for the par 3 contest which is the traditional curtain raiser to The Masters tournament.

Garrick's motto is 'living the dream' and based on this result and the tournaments he is about to play in this is becoming a reality. Winning this event is beginning to sink in and he is really looking forward to teeing it up in The Open at Muirfield.

Hot on the heels of his second placed finish in the Welsh Open Stroke-play Championship at Royal Porthcawl. Garrick Porteous (Bamburgh Castle) went one better at the Carrick Neil Scottish Amateur Stroke-play Championship by winning the title and becoming the third Englishman in the last five years to do so.

At blustery Southerness golf club on the Solway Firth, Garrick shot 68-69-72-68 to finish one over par and lead the field by four shots. He led after two rounds and at that point was the only player under par. Despite the final day pressure from Ireland's Richard O'Donovan and Dermot McElroy and England's Callum Shinkwin, Garrick played controlled golf in tough conditions as his final nine holes of one under par demonstrated.

Garrick was elated with his first major victory following numerous top five finishes. His golf is developing a real consistency and he also reduced his handicap to plus five. However, there is no rest, as later this week he heads back to Scotland for the St Andrews Link Trophy at the Home of Golf.

Garrick Porteous (Bamburgh Castle) came very close to winning the Welsh Open Strokeplay Championships at Royal Porthcawl, 17-19th May, and finally finished runner up. In near perfect conditions Garrick started really well in round one posting 67 (5 under par) to take the clubhouse lead. He maintained that lead through round two with a level par 72, almost holing a 9 iron tee shot at the 11th hole for an ace.

Going out in the last group on the final day, his third round 74 was a little disappointing but he bounced straight back with the best final round 68 for a 7 under par total. He finished four shots behind current European Amateur Champion and fellow GB&I partner, Rhys Pugh, who shot 66-70 on the final day to finish at 11 under par.

Garrick's work with coach Graham Walker and his commitment to practice and fitness work are certainly paying off. The momentum of a top 20 finish in the Lytham Trophy and now an excellent second in the Welsh Amateur augurs well for the forthcoming prestigious amateur events in June and July.

Garrick Porteous played a significant role in helping England's men team regain the European Nations Championship after overhauling overnight leaders France on the fourth and final day in Sotogrande in Spain. He shot 74-75-70-69 and was the only team member to count in all four rounds. The victory means England has held the title four times in the past five years.

Garrick was joined in the team by Max Orrin, Nathan Kimsey and Toby Tree, with three scores counting out of four on all days of the tournament. England started brightly on day one in very windy conditions and led France by five shots, Tree leading the way with a 68. France bounced back on day two to regain the lead, but England closed the gap to just two shots after round three following fine rounds from Porteous (70), Orrin (71) and Kinsey (71).

The final day saw England go even lower with Orrin (68), Porteous (69) and Tree (71), their best return of the week. Thus enabling them to overhaul France and win the title by six shots.

Individually, Toby Tree finished fifth, Max Orrin and Garrick sixth and Nathan Kimsey 16 th. Overall, this was a very satisfying week for Garrick and the rest of the team.

Garrick's six week golf tour in Australia proved to be very successful. England sent four of the elite squad to compete in a number of major amateur events. Being away in January and February Garrick was fortunate to miss all the snow, wind and rain associated with the British winter. However, he had to contend with playing golf in extreme summer temperatures (over 40C at times) and the tough Melbourne and Sydney wind. In all, it was a great experience with some very satisfying results, which all bodes well for the rest of the year.

The first tournament was the Australian Master of the Amateurs at Royal Melbourne. Against an international field, Garrick quickly overcame his three-month winter layoff and jetlag. His scores of 74-67-72-73 (-2) resulted in him finishing in sixth place. His second event saw him compete in the Australian Amateur. He comfortably qualified in the top 64 of the stroke play (13th) and then embarked onto the match play only to be thwarted in the last 32 round.

Garrick and his three other England internationals then travelled from Melbourne to Sydney to compete in the Lake Macquarie Amateur at Belmont Golf Club. Four very steady rounds of 71-72-71-70 (-4) saw Garrick placed ninth. The New South Wales Amateur followed and Garrick's form continued as he battled for podium honours. He shot 70-67-72 (-4) to finish third and secure his best finish on the tour of Australia. From this event, he progressed into the New South Wales match play and after some early victories, he was finally defeated in the quarter final.

Spain now beckons at the end of February for the Spanish Amateur at La Manga.
